Angus McAdam

Consultant, Bachelor of Project Management

I started with TBH as an Intern over my university summer holidays, and recently finished my Bachelor of Project Management and became a Consultant in the Sydney team.

Although there may be a perception that all interns do is make coffee runs and print photocopies, TBH gave me the opportunities to get hands-on project management experience. My recent training in Microsoft Project was almost immediately put into practise: I helped run a Microsoft Project Training Day for NSW eHealth and found myself doing site walks, status updates and reported on the construction of new residential blocks around Sydney. TBH have a mentoring program which ensures employees are supported both professionally and personally.

One of my favourite things about TBH is the number of industries you are exposed to. During my time at TBH I have worked in Residential & Commercial Infrastructure, Roads & Tunnels, Education, Health, Energy, Government and Defence. I have friends from university who have been in the one industry since graduating, and they are looking for other opportunities and ways to get exposure to other industries – this exposure comes naturally at TBH. This is the way one of my colleagues’ likes to explain TBH’s role: in a project there are lots of different facets – scheduling, cost, risk, governance, procurement etc. What TBH does, is for any given project, we take one for these facets and provide an expert service. I enjoy knowing the work that TBH does is unparalleled and how we make our difference in the project management industry. Additionally, because of the volume of projects you get exposed to, I take a personal pride in being able to travel around Sydney and see the finished projects that I have worked on, such as Willoughby Girls Public School or Theatre Royal in Martin Place and have an understanding about the challenges each project needed to overcome and the story behind how these projects came to be.

TBH has a strong education culture – they want new Graduates and Consultants to learn, and they have the framework to effectively Deliver training. Coming straight out of university, TBH want to teach you what exact services we provide and how we go about providing these services. This can range from dedicated sessions on learning how to use project management scheduling, cost or risk software, to deep dives on lessons learnt on previous projects we have worked on such as Sydney Light Rail or the WestConnex Tunnels.

On top of that, there is a genuine social atmosphere across the entire company. The Directors are particularly approachable, and Consultants are very inclusive and sociable. TBH have regular social activities for all employees such as Lawn Bowls, Pool Competitions and Ski Trips, which are great ways to get to know other TBHers outside of the office. It’s very common to see groups of consultants wandering downstairs to get a coffee together in the morning or coming together for Friday afternoon drinks in the kitchen. It truly makes coming into work each day worthwhile.

As alluded to, TBH offer multiple social events throughout the year, as coordinated by our Social Committee, which I am a member of. I also work in developing TBH as a business by participating in our Inclusivity & Diversity Committee. Within this Committee we aim to embrace and support the diversity of all TBHers. Particularly, I currently work in the LGBTQIA+ objective where we are actively seeking avenues to promote diversity through awareness keynotes and training sessions.

Some big opportunities I have had working with TBH include having access to some of Sydney’s major infrastructure projects At TBH I have had the opportunity to walk around sites such as the Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment and Parramatta Powerhouse.

I have also been seconded to other companies to provide cost control support on major energy sector infrastructure projects, liaising directly with our client’s project team and workstream leads. This has allowed me to improve my skills in developing working relationships with clients as well as giving me the opportunity to represent TBH as a company and the high-quality services we provide.

Finally, TBH have also given me opportunities to develop my soft skills, such as public speaking and my presentation skills; recently I was given the opportunity, along with our Group CEO, to host a keynote address with Minus18 as part of our LGBTQIA+ initiative within the Inclusivity & Diversity Committee. This keynote was held across our Australian profit centres and was a great exercise in advancing my confidence in public speaking.

Duy Le

Consultant, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Science

I have worked in the TBH Melbourne office for over a year and a half. I started as an Analyst after completing my studies obtaining a double degree in Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Science and was recently promoted to a Consultant.

My favourite thing about working with TBH is being able to work on many different services. Within my short term at TBH I’ve had the chance to work on a varying range of projects, ranging from developing Power BI Dashboards to planning and scheduling. Through these experiences, I have been able to quickly build my technical skills so that I can bring them to future engagements.

Outside of work, TBH has hosted several social events which I have had the pleasure of joining. It is a great way to get to know the office and create new memories though dinners and social sports. I look forward to experiencing more in TBH.

My current engagement involves a combination working autonomously as well as working alongside clients to assist in their reporting needs. As I am currently seconded to Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV), my experiences have allowed me to work in the roads sector with their end of month reporting as well as developing Power BI dashboards to assist with their portfolio reporting which has been a new and interesting experience.

A breakdown of my typical workday varies given that I frequently travel between the client and main TBH office. It tends to start with client meetings to gain a better understanding of their daily needs as well as setting up for future deliverables. The rest of my day is allocated to completing my regular responsibilities as well as any urgent requests. These tend to be collaborative tasks which gives me the opportunity to interact with both the client and TBH team. Outside of work engagements, I like to regularly join team lunches and coffee breaks with my colleagues which gives me a great chance to stay in touch with everyone while on separate projects.

The office has been very welcoming since entering the company. I have always been able to strike up conversations with people within the office and I have found it easy to ask for help where required. Even as a shy individual, the office has been extremely welcoming and everyone makes an effort to check in with each other.

Additionally, TBH’s mentor program has been instrumental in my development and progression at TBH. Through regularly catch ups, it provides an opportunity to ask questions and gain feedback through my current and previous projects as well as seeking ways to fast track my career. This also has been a safe outlet for any questions that I have had and my mentor has been wonderful in ensuring these concerns are heard and validated whilst providing realistic solutions.

I have been working at Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) which has been wonderful at giving an insight into the planning and scheduling that goes into the construction of road projects across Victoria. It has been interesting to observe the work involved in managing projects of such a large scale.

Building upon the technical skills that I’ve previously mentioned, I have had the opportunity to assist in creating a myriad of reports to a wide audience which range from engineers, project managers and executives within the company. I am extremely proud of the repertoire Power BI Dashboards that I have created thus far which have allowed my clients to access and view their data quickly without the need for days of analysis.

As a chemical engineering graduate, I had no idea that my career would lead me to a career at TBH. Although my engineering discipline is very different from my colleagues, I have been able to adapt and use my critical thinking skills to excel at communicating with clients and come up with interesting and exciting solutions. The best advice I can give to a graduate is to keep an open mind while looking to start their career. Although it may stray away from your initial expectations, you will be able to discover new industries which will pique your interest.

I started at TBH in January 2017 as a Intern while completing my Mechanical Engineering degree. I then became a full time Consultant in January 2018. I have had the opportunity to work on many major projects, most significantly a long-term secondment at Sydney Light Rail where I developed countless soft and technical skills. I have also been involved in developing TBH’s Integrated Project Controls and Risk services. Recently, I have had the opportunity to participate in an external leadership program and be a mentor in an external mentoring program which provides industry mentors for Women in Engineering university students.

My favourite thing about working at TBH is easily the people I work with. I have made lots of great friends and everyone I have worked with has been very helpful and supportive, particularly our directors. I also enjoy that TBH being a consultancy means that I have been involved in a large variety of projects and industries. TBH has a fantastic culture. Directors led every project and are often very technically involved which allows Consultants access to countless learning opportunities from the best industry experts. TBH also hosts lots of fun social events including Friday drinks and lunch time sport. I am involved in a lot of our non-technical committees. I am on the social committee which organises all of the social events for the Sydney office. , I am also on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee which aims to improve TBH’s social and environmental impact. Additionally, every TBH employee is allocated a mentor and I have been able to mentor two Consultants which has allowed me to strengthen my communication and leadership skills, as well as being a genuinely rewarding experience.
